About this deal

After Roy's family had discovered what had happened due to questions being raised by Roy's bank calling his daughter Chettina, who had his power of attorney, because there was further very large transfer sums of money being requested for transfer, they took her to court. Lindsay Finnimore made claims to being his girlfriend and in a bid to have access to his assets made claims to being his common law wife. Roy said that he believed she was very intelligent and helping him but didn't find her attractive or girlfriend material. In 2010, Bindon was the subject of Ten Men: The Lives of John Bindon, a one-man verse play written and directed by Franklyn McCabe, with Matthew Houghton playing Bindon. The play was performed at the Open House pub theatre as part of the Brighton Fringe Festival in 2010. [15] Gerard himself was acquitted in 1980, along with Knight, of murdering Alfredo "Italian Tony" Zomparelli, who was gunned down in September 1974 as he played pinball in the Golden Goose amusement arcade in Soho. High Court judge Sir John Lindsay said that Finnimore had been "untruthful" in her case evidence. Of Finnimore, the judge said: "She, for whom the word 'feisty' could have been minted, is more educated than he and far more intelligent. Unfortunately, her considerable skills have not always been applied to acceptable purposes." Mark Morris of Aardvark Forensics Ltd provided expert evidence to the Court and demonstrated how a number of forged documents had been created on a personal computer. It was 1975. A local man, James Venton, fell foul of Hole. Newspaper reports neglect to mention Venton's offence, but what followed was not about exacting retribution, but building reputation. Hole and a local boxer, Billy Williams, went to Venton's home. The two men dragged him into the street, where Williams held Venton down while Hole ran over him three times with a car. The brutality of the case made the headlines and Venton agreed to act as chief witness for the prosecution. Hole was jailed for seven years for attempted murder. Forty-eight hours later, three men went to the home of Venton's family and smashed four windows. Hole had begun to amass a loyal following.

On his release from prison, Shaw started fighting unlicensed (i.e. not sanctioned by the British Boxing Board of Control) [3] boxing matches in 1978, aged 42, and gained many infamous victories, including one over Donnie "The Bull" Adams. Shaw also beat former world heavyweight contender Ron Stander, who had also previously fought Joe Frazier for the heavyweight title. Stander however broke a rib before the fight with Roy Shaw. Shaw would later say in his book that he kept hitting Stander with punches which had no effect on Stander – until he found his broken rib. In Shaw's words if Stander had not broken his rib he would have 'mullered me'. Bindon's name was also linked with a succession of models, including Christine Keeler, [2] the former Playboy "Bunny Girl" Serena Williams, [2] and also Angela Barnett, then girlfriend and future wife of pop star David Bowie. [2] [8]During the 1980s, Bindon became a reclusive figure, spending more of his time at his Belgravia flat. He died on 10 October 1993, aged 50. According to Philip Hoare's obituary in The Independent, he died from cancer. [2] References in popular culture [ edit ] This article needs additional citations for verification. I knew this lovely old boy when I was a kid, he had been a booth boxer in Scotland, received the cat in prison, been shot outside a club one night (he said they did him a right favour as they found a cancer when they got him on the operating table!!!).......this is how he lived his life, but he wound up totally institutionalised in the end he had done that much bird.

He said the Italian-born gangster was assassinated in revenge for the murder of Knight's brother, David, who died after a fight at the Latin Quarter nightclub in London's West End in 1970. Roy Shaw was celebrated in song in 2011 when a group called The Sharks released "The King Of London (aka The Ballad Of Pretty Boy Shaw)". The song was written by band member Alan Wilson who met and became friends with Roy Shaw via their mutual friend Ronnie Biggs. a b c d e f g h i j k l Hoare, Philip (6 November 1993). Shaw co-wrote a book with Kate Kray, the widow of Ronnie Kray, entitled Roy Shaw: Unleashed (2003). The book is a collection of stories and anecdotes about the criminal underworld of London in the 1970s/1980s, as well as Shaw's boxing career. Shaw's autobiography, entitled Pretty Boy (2003), was also co-written by Kray. It goes into further detail Shaw's early life, personal and private life, time in prison, and also expanding on stories begun in his previous book. As a teenager, he served time in a borstal for possessing live ammunition. After jobs ranging from laying asphalt to dealing in antiques (his best friend for several years was the antiques dealer John Hobbs), [5] Bindon pursued a career in acting.

About the Book

Christina now lives alone in their flat, the entrance to which Tommy never managed to finish carpeting. She speaks delicately of the man who was broken by his son's death and who hated his past. 'Tommy was trying to avoid old places and people he knew,' she recalls. 'It all hurt him. We bumped into an old friend one afternoon. He simply said: "Hello, how are you, Tommy?" As we walked away, I could see he was drenched in sweat.' Bindon was acquitted of Darke's murder in November 1979. It was reported that the "substantial appearance" of actor Bob Hoskins as a character witness at the trial helped sway the jury's verdict [2] and that the judge, Sir William Mars-Jones, "had been sympathetic towards Bindon in his summing-up and unhappy with the ragbag of witnesses produced by the prosecution". [13]

Both had long-time connections to the London underworld and it was not long before theories began on the East End grapevine. Criminal robbery has one advantage: no one turns to the police. This was an easy deal - one where the risk of reprisal was countered by the magnitude of the payoff. Hole had chosen to make a statement of force that would make him a big enough face to leave Canning Town. Shaw routinely stabbed police informers and even slashed the throat of a former best friend while incarcerated owing to his strong belief in a "code of honour" among criminals that must not be broken. In 1978, Bindon was tried for the murder of London gangster Johnny Darke. Bindon pleaded self-defence and was acquitted, but the case damaged his reputation, and that, coupled with being seen by directors as difficult to work with, meant his acting career declined. In the 1980s, Bindon became reclusive; he died in 1993. A passage from the book reads: "Roy bashed up one of the twins' so-called big minders and word on the street in the East End was there was going to be serious repercussions because the twins seen this as Roy “mugging them off” and they couldn’t be seen to let it go." For the arts administrator, see Roy Shaw (arts administrator). For the English politician, see Roy Shaw (politician). Gerard had been overstepping the mark for years. A wreath had been laid on his doorstep earlier. Even Knight refers to the killing as testament that Gerard had 'got it wrong'. Hole and his son were cleared of the murder when an ID parade proved inconclusive. Linda Gerard moved to another area. Media reports of the trial, along with the Oakland incident, seriously damaged Bindon's reputation and he found it increasingly difficult to find work in the entertainment industry.
